In 1920, Jaidev Verma is a famous poet who lives the life of a loner as he is unable to meet the love of his life, Smruti. They got to know each other through an exchange of letters and slowly fall in love. One day, Jaidev receives a letter informing him that Smruti had an accident and died. Now his sister Karuna is his only support system that keeps him motivated. One day Jaidev finds an unconscious girl near a lake and brings her home. After gaining consciousness, she is unable to remember anything from her past life except Jaidev's poems. Shiva always believed in making his own destiny. So when he fell in love with Meena daughter of his arch rival and enemy Parashuram , he knew he was inviting trouble. But Shiva got married to her. Doctor Baldev (Suresh) hailing from a middle-class family marries a rich woman named Rekha (Shashikala). While she is willing to make adjustments to fit into her new family, Baldev feels guilty for giving her a life devoid of comforts. Honest retired judge justice Deenanath lives a happy life with his wife and two sons, lawyer Ravi and inspector Sunil. One day Ravi brings home a poor girl Sharda, to rehabilitate as she has no place to live after her father's death. The family likes Sharda and subsequently all arrange Ravi and Sharda's wedding. But on the wedding day a prisoner, Jankidas suddenly arrives and claims Sharda as his wife. Every one is shocked including the mayor. The family is shattered when Ravi leaves home to live with Sharda. Jankidas again claims Sharda as his wife and this time during a conflict with Ravi one of his henchmen gets killed and Ravi is implicated. Sunil arrests his elder brother for the crime.
