This 1948 adventure is an adaptation of an adaptation of an adaptation! "The Prince of Thieves" was adapted from Alexandre Dumas' 1872 novel "Le Prince des Voleurs", which itself was a French translation of Pierce Egan's 1838 serialised adventure "Robin Hood and Little John; or, the Merrie Men of Sherwood Forest". One of the more formulaic and low-energy mid-century adaptations, "The Prince of Thieves" sees Robin Hood and his men help the knight Sir Allan Claire rescue his betrothed, the Lady Christabel, from the clutches of her wicked father and Prince John's nephew, the evil Baron Tristram. While not the most exciting of adventures, it's presented here for those who haven't seen the ORIGINAL "Prince of Thieves!" Starring Jon Hall as Robin Hood, Michael Duane as Sir Allan Claire, Adele Jergens as Lady Christabel, Patricia Morison as Lady Marian, and Walter Sande as Little John.

In the wake of the monumental success of 1938's "The Adventures of Robin Hood", studios were hesitant to attempt to rival such a film - even Warner Bros. pulled out of a sequel. 1946's "The Bandit of Sherwood Forest" found the perfect solution - adapt a book! The first of the 'son of Robin Hood' genre, this film was roughly adapted from Paul Castleton's 1941 novel "Son of Robin Hood".

When the evil regent, the Earl of Pembroke (a horrific villainisation of the one of the most famously heroic figures of medieval England, William Marshal!), plots to make himself the king by killing the boy king Henry III, his mother, Isabella of Angouleme, and her handmaid Catherine seek the help of Robin Hood, who has returned to Sherwood Forest with his band to fight the evil regent. Robin's son Robert joins the fight, leading the Merry Men to restore the discarded Magna Carta and ensure Henry's place on the throne.

The film features probably the most unlikable protagonist in Robin Hood films, which is a shame as he's the lead action hero. The son of Robin Hood, Cornel Wilde's Robert, is an entitled, arrogant brat who sexually harasses the romantic lead, Anita Louise as Lady Catherine. This is more than typical 1940s misogyny - the character is brash to a sickly degree that makes the film quite unpleasant to watch at times.

That being said, it's no more a sword-and-castle Sunday afternoon adventure than something like 1958's "Son of Robin Hood", but this has much more personality and gorgeous colour. Starring Cornel Wilde as Robert, Russell Hicks as Robin Hood, Anita Louise as Lady Catherine, Jill Esmond as Queen Isabella, Henry Daniell as the Earl of Pembroke, and Lloyd Corrigan as the Sheriff of Nottingham.

Venki (Prithviraj) is an entrance coaching professor by day and robs automated teller machines (ATMs) using fake debit cards by night. He has been operating out of Kochi for the past three months and the Imperial Bank of India (IBI) is the target of all these robberies.

ACP Harris (Jayasurya) is in charge of the investigation. But the managing director of the bank, Nandakumar Menon (Biju Menon), is not happy with the way the investigations are proceeding as the cops have been harassing the bank's customers. The bank authorities have ruled out a problem in their systems as the same system is used by other banks. The other banks are not yet a target. All the transactions done by the robber have been using a debit card.

Nandakumar Menon decides to conduct an investigation in parallel with the cops. He summons a private Detective Alexander Felix (Narain). Felix is an unkempt young man who opted out of IPS. On the first day, he oversleeps on the train and does not disembark at Kochi. But appearances are deceptive. Beneath the surface, Felix is a sharp investigator. In order to assist him, the bank also appoints a senior systems manager, Roopa (Bhavana). Felix and Roopa move into the IBI guesthouse, which is right across from Venki’s apartment. Slowly, the trio begins a friendship. The rest of the story focuses on what happens to the three friends, how Felix succeeds in finding the ATM thief and what is the story behind Venki’s hatred towards IBI. Abhirami (Samvrutha Sunil) adds to the star cast as one of Venkatesh's students who has a crush on him.

After the enormous success of 1938's "The Adventures of Robin Hood", studios were hesitant to make Robin Hood films for fear of paling in comparison. Despite a few standalone adventures, this fear was dodged by a series of "son of Robin Hood" pictures, with the Prince of Thieves cast as the older, matured outlaw of days past, with their son the action hero played by a young up-and-comer. 1958's "Son of Robin Hood" introduced the twist that Robin Hood's daughter had come to claim her father's mantle, yet in a horribly predictable manner, a male character became the focus of the film very quickly, the titular son being a rouse.

The most recent of the child-of-Robin-Hood films, 2001's "Princess of Thieves" corrects this unfortunate direction, seeing Gwyn, the daughter of Robin Hood and Maid Marian, endeavour to break out of her monotonous life of study and inhabit the action and adventure she's heard so much about in her famous mother's life - despite her father's overprotectiveness, as Marian has since died. With Robin captured by the would-be-King John, Gwyn works to both rescue her father and find the true heir to Richard's kingdom, his son Philip, and place him on the throne. A twist on history, Philip of Cognac was a real, and only, child of Richard, though an illegitimate one who never inherited the crown, of course, much less had a remote chance to do so. But probably worse is the claim that Richard was king in 1184! Henry II would reign until 1189, with Richard only Duke of Aquitaine and Count of Poitiers during this time. Nevertheless, despite the TV-movie aesthetic, "Princess of Thieves" is a charming escape into the imaginary of Robin Hood.
