Bhola (Rajesh Khanna), a young musician, leaves for the city to earn money for his sister Belu's (Kumari Naaz) marriage. However, as soon as he enters the city, people around him identify him as Ranjit. When Ranjit meets Bhola, he decides to train the naive Bhola, to fool the Police. Inspector Pradhan (Vinod Khanna) sends an undercover cop Leena (Mumtaz) to apprehend Ranjit. But as fate would have it, Meena gets charmed by Bhola and they fall in love. Things go as planned for Inspector Pradhan and he entraps Ranjit. Now Pradhan must identify the real Ranjit and punish him. Watch out for the exciting climax.

Synopsis:
The story of a bunch of misfits whose misconception about each others backgrounds end up in a series of chaotic, yet comic outcomes. Aftab Shivdasani (Nandu) and Rimi Sen (Anjali) play two strangers who have to pretend that are a married couple in order to get a place to live. Paresh Rawal (Radheysham Tiwari) plays a rich, yet ground to earth businessman whose business is named after his wife (Shoma Anand) Anjali. Paresh Rawal's wife thinks that he is having an affair with Rimi Sen & while Paresh Rawal thinks his wife is having an affair with Akshaye Khanna due to Rimi Sen and her having the same name. Then comes in Shakti Kapoor (Tejabhai alias Kachara Seth) whose daughter falls in love with a guy pretending to be Paresh Rawal's son and soon everything gets out of control

A perfect plan by ACP Amar Agnihotri to trap Jailer Lankeshwar who is using some jailed convicts to act as hit-men for a fee, by allowing them to leave the jail, carry out their job, and then be back with a perfect alibi. Amar proposes to the Minister to permit a Police Inspector to be jailed, who will then find out the real truth about Lankeshwar and his convicts. Arjun Singh is the police inspector selected for this job, and he agrees to do so. A plan is contrived by Amar and his superiors, which will result in Arjun shooting Amar down with a blank bullet, and then absconding. This goes according to plan, and Arjun is apprehended and held for court. He pleads guilty, and is sentenced to Lankeshwar's jail. While in jail, Arjun finds out that Amar has been killed, and he has become a convict for real.
